Job Description

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State University has an immediate opening for a Science Planner (Research Technologist – Physical Sciences, Intermediate Professional) on the Science Operations Team of The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory program. Swift (http://swift.gsfc.nasa.gov) is a NASA MIDEX-class Explorer mission operating since November 2004.

The duties of a Science Planner include:

  • Creating schedules for targets to be observed by Swift.
  • Participating in Swift operations as required.
  • Supporting science analysis conducted by Swift research faculty.

Education and Experience

This position requires a Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency in computing programming, especially in the Python language, is desirable.

Additional Information

This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with the possibility of renewal.

This position offers a flexible work arrangement that combines remote and on-campus work. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.
